Police investigating corruption in football have carried out a raid at Birmingham City Football Club, it has been confirmed.

No one was arrested during the operation but financial documents are understood to have been removed.

A spokeswoman for City of London police said the raid was made in connection with the force's ongoing anti-corruption investigation which began in 2006.

"Officers from City of London police executed a search warrant at a premises this morning in connection with the ongoing investigation into football corruption," she said.

But the force denied reports the raid was connected to Lord Stevens' inquiry into corruption in football.

Birmingham said the club was "fully cooperating" with police and insisted the raid was directed against "unconnected third party or third parties".

"For the avoidance of doubt no one connected with the club has been questioned or arrested," a statement on the club's official website said.

Last summer Newcastle United, Portsmouth and Rangers were raided by City of London police, while Pompey manager Harry Redknapp and Tottenham Hotspur defender Pascal Chimbonda were both arrested.
