Carlos Tevez has claimed he has promised Sir Alex Ferguson he will sign for Manchester United.
The Premiership champions and West Ham are set for a fierce battle over the controversial Argentina striker.
The Hammers claim they own Tevez and the 23-year-old has three years left on his contract.
But businessman Kia Joorabchian, Tevez's agent, claims the Hammers gave him permission to hunt for a new club for the striker.
Tevez's representatives have been thrashing out a two-year loan deal worth around £60 million with United.
Tevez said he has given his word to Sir Alex he will sign for United.
"Through my backers I have given my word to Mr Ferguson. They have told him I'll be at Manchester United next season and once I make a promise I don't go back on it," Tevez told the Sunday People newspaper.
"There isn't a player who would turn down this opportunity and the negotiations are too far advanced to go back now.
"I have been open and honest with West Ham every step of the way and I hope the fans understand."
Manchester United believe their move for Tevez will not break Premier League rules over third-party ownership.
Liverpool were given the all-clear to swoop for Javier Mascherano in the January transfer window despite the midfielder's registration owned by Joorabchian's Media Sports Investment group.
Meanwhile the News of the World claims the Hammers have evicted Tevez from his luxury apartment while he is away on Copa America duty with Argentina.
The tabloid says the club have taken away all of Tevez's personal belongings and given the Canary Wharf penthouse to new signing Julien Faubert.
