West Ham manager Alan Curbishley hopes striker Craig Bellamy will not require another operation on his abdominal injury.
The Welsh international has been out for nearly two months after having an operation in Germany, but the injury hasn't completely healed. Curbishley, however, stressed the 28-year-old could recover without further surgery.
"The surgeons have agreed it's not what was needed and that just a lot of hard work was required," said Curbishley.
"We've locked him away with the physiotherapist and the fitness coach to work as hard as he can and to try and recover.
"He has got to do this for a couple of weeks as well as all the core fitness work to build up his groin and stomach muscles."
Bellamy has only started eight games for the London club after moving from Liverpool for a club record £7.5 million fee.
He is expected to miss the Hammers' entire Christmas schedule of Premier League fixtures as well as the third round of the FA Cup.
West Ham have had terrible luck with injuries, with summer signings Scott Parker, Kieron Dyer, Julien Fubert, and Bellamy all suffering long-term knocks.
Dyer is expected to be out for the rest of the season with a broken leg, but Faubert should be back soon.
