Manchester United draw 1-1 with Kaizer Chiefs in tour opener
Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw by Kaizer Chiefs in the opening game of their South African tour.
The home side took the lead with a first-half penalty from Jonathan Quartey, but Chris Eagles, making a rare first-team outing, gave United a share of the spoils in the Vodacom Challenge in Cape Town.
The 22-year-old midfielder equalised in the 59th minute with a deflected header from a Carlos Tevez cross.
Sir Alex Ferguson named a strong side for the game at the Newlands Stadium, which included six of the team that started in the Champions League victory against Chelsea.
Wayne Rooney partnered Tevez in attack and Gary Neville played an hour as he continued his comeback from long-term injury, on the back of 45 minutes against Aberdeen last week.
Neville gave away the penalty which gave the home side the lead in a full-blooded game which saw Rooney receive a yellow card.
Neither team were able to find a winner after Eagles equalised and the game petered out into a draw.
United now travel to Durban where they will take on the Orlando Pirates on Tuesday.
Elsewhere, new Fulham signing Bobby Zamora scored on his debut as Roy Hodgson's side beat Celtic 3-1 in front of 16,000 at Craven Cottage.
And Damien Duff scored a hat-trick as Newcastle came from behind to beat Hartlepool 4-1.
