Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has revealed winger Harry Kewell is close to returning from his injury nightmare.
The Reds' forgotten man has not played for the club this season after suffering a groin injury while playing for Australia in the Asia Cup this summer.
The 29-year-old has a horrendous fitness record during his four years at Anfield, playing just three games last season.
Benitez insists the midfielder is still a vital part of his squad.
"Harry is working really hard and next week he could be training with the first team," Benitez said.
"Harry is very important for us. A player with pace and ability who can score goals is always important.
"It's clear he's someone with great quality and experience and we need these kind of players for the rest of the season."
Kewell's last appearance was as a substitute in the defeat to AC Milan in the Champions League final in May.
His contract expires next summer with the summer signings of Yossi Benayoun from West Ham and Ryan Babel from Ajax casting a doubt over the Australian's future.
If Kewell returns to training next week, he could make an appearance in the Merseyside derby against Everton on October 20th.
