West Ham United have confirmed that Kieron Dyer suffered a double fracture of his right leg in last night's Carling Cup victory over Bristol Rovers.
The winger was stretchered off midway through the second half after collapsing under a challenge from Rovers defender Joe Jacobson.
And according to a club statement, Dyer "has suffered a double-fracture to his lower leg" which was revealed after a series of X-rays were taken in hospital last night.
"Kieron was stretchered off the pitch and rushed straight to hospital where it was confirmed he had fractured both the tibia and fibula of his right leg," the statement continued.
"It is too early to say at this stage how long the player will be out for as this will become clearer once the first stage of surgery is completed."
The simple fact that Dyer requires an operation means he will be ruled out of England's upcoming European Championship qualifying double-header against Israel and Russia at Wembley next month.
He is also unlikely to return anytime before 2008 at the earliest, meaning he will almost certainly miss the rest of England's qualifying campaign.
The injury is also a blow to West Ham manager Alan Curbishley's plans for his side's Premier League campaign, following Dyer's £6 million switch from Newcastle earlier this month.
