Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has revealed that he might have signed Carlos Tevez had it not been for Manchester United.
The Gunners manager today admitted the Argentine striker would have been on his summer wishlist were Sir Alex Ferguson not interested.
But after it became clear that the Premier League champions wanted to take the West Ham striker to Old Trafford, Wenger dropped his interest.
"When I saw Manchester United on the case, I thought no. If they had not been on the case, yes," Wenger told reporters at a press conference ahead of tomorrow's clash with United.
"I would have analysed it and looked at how would it go. But it looked as if they were on the case early."
Tevez was at the centre of one of the biggest transfer stories of the close-season after it became apparent that he would not be staying at Upton Park, despite helping the Hammers stay up almost singlehandedly.
But his success was marred by the fact that the east London club were fined £5.5 million for breaching Premier League regulations when they brought him to the club last year.
Wenger's side have enjoyed a blistering start to the season regardless of their failure to land the 23-year-old, however, and take a 100 per cent home record into tomorrow's clash at the Emirates.
Both clubs are locked on 26 points at the top of the table, although the north Londoners have played a game less and have a superior goal difference.
