Everton followed up their Carling Cup win over West Ham in midweek with a 2-0 away win against the same opponents in the Premier League.
The Hammers opened the scoring in their previous defeat and they made the better start again.
Dean Ashton saw a dipping volley fly just off target while Freddie Ljungberg bore down on Tim Howard but could only fire a shot against the American stopper's midriff.
With the interval beckoning however the visitors stole ahead as Yakubu Aiyegbeni nipped in front of Robert Green to steer home a header after Tim Cahill redirected a Mikel Arteta cross back into the danger area.
The Toffees could have extended their lead on the other side of the break when Leon Osman stole clean through on goal but pushed his shot agonisingly wide of the far post.
Yakubu had Green scrambling along his line to claw away a well-hit drive from the edge of the box soon after but David Moyes' side began to drop deeper and put bodies behind the ball as the hosts pushed for an equaliser.
After fending off a string of long balls hoisted into the box, Everton suddenly broke upfield as Andy Johnson raced into oceans of space before clipping a finish over a helpless Green to crown the win.
