Birmingham City look to have overcome their recent dip in form after adding a 2-1 win over Leicester City to their weekend win over Southampton.
Victory at the Walkers Stadium moves Steve Bruce's side back up above Derby in the race for automatic promotion with Roy Keane's Sunderland two points further ahead.
Former Bolton defender Radhi Jaidi forced home the first for the visitors on 16 minutes with a powerful header from a Gary McSheffrey corner.
Three minutes later and a twisting run from Andy Cole ended in a measured ball across the face of goal for Sebastain Larsson to finish and give the Blues breathing space.
The visitors relied on a pair of spectacular saves from Colin Doyle to maintain their clean sheet for much of the second half, but when a precise Shaun Newton free-kick found the corner eight minutes from time it was the signal for the Foxes to lay siege to the Birmingham goal.
But the hosts could not find a way through as they were left with a result which will increase relegation fears with the drop-zone now lurking only two points away over their shoulder.
Meanwhile the Blues have their sights firmly set on a return to the Premiership at the first attempt after a heart-wrenching relegation season last year.
