Tottenham Hotspur full-back Gareth Bale has been ruled out for the rest of the season after a review of the surgery on his injured foot.
The 18-year-old, who signed from Championship side Southampton in the summer, has been restricted to just eight league appearances this season because of injury.
Bale's latest problem was a sprained ligament in his right foot, which resulted in the Welsh international being sent for surgery.
And giving an update on the player's status, Spurs sporting director Damien Comolli confirmed he was unlikely to play any further part in the first-team during the current campaign.
"Gareth's injury was reviewed today and although the surgeon was happy with the results of the X-rays he does not anticipate Gareth being able to play any further part in this season," Comolli revealed to the club's official website.
"We are all disappointed for Gareth, but he is still very young and his long-term fitness is our priority."
In Bale's absence, Spurs have signed Scottish international full-back Alan Hutton for a reported fee of £9 million from Rangers.
He has slotted in at right-back, with Pascal Chimbonda switching flanks to left-back, and manager Juande Ramos also has other options for cover through Young-Pyo Lee, Benoit Assou-Ekotto and versatile midfielder Didier Zokora.
