Paul Gascoigne has been detained under the Mental Health Act
Former England footballer Paul Gascoigne has been arrested under the Mental Health Act following an incident at a Newcastle hotel.
A Northumbria police spokesman confirmed that officers attended the Hilton Hotel in Gateshead yesterday evening.
Police received a report of disorderly behaviour involving a 40-year-old man staying at the hotel.
The spokesman said that the man was subsequently detained under the Mental Health Act.
No one was injured in the incident and no arrests were made, it was reported.
'Gazza' played for Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur and Lazio, among others, during his footballing career.
He is well known for his goal against Scotland in Euro 1996 and for breaking down in tears during the 1990 World Cup semi-final against Germany, after receiving a booking that would have ruled him out of the final.
Gascoigne however is as well known for his activities off the pitch as on and in the past has been admitted to specialist drug and alcohol clinics.
In 2005 he was sacked as manager of non-league Kettering after only 39 days in charge over claims involving his conduct.
Club owner Imraan Ladak alleged Gascoigne had been drinking too much during his time at the club.
