Newcastle United increased the pressure on Tottenham Hotspur manager Martin Jol with a 3-1 win in their Premier League clash at St James' Park.
The result leaves the lacklustre north London outfit stuck in the relegation zone with just seven points after ten games of a season that was supposed to herald their emergence as a major power at the other end of the table.
The Magpies soon had their opponents reeling when Abdoulaye Faye shuddered the woodwork with an early header.
Michael Owen and Obafemi Martins both went close as the hosts pinned Tottenham down in their own half for the latter part of the second half.
However it had seemed the visitors would weather the storm and retreat to the dressing room still level before Martins latched on to a through ball from Jose Enrique and gleefully lashed a finish across Radek Cerny for the opener just seconds short of half-time.
Five minutes after the break and Spurs' predicament worsened, as defender Claudio Cacapa scored his first goal since arriving on Tyneside with a strong header.
Robbie Keane reacted fastest when strike partner Darren Bent's header bounced back off the post on 55 minutes and, with Dimitar Berbatov thrust into a three-man attack, a stirring comeback seemed possible.
But it never quite materialised and James Milner gave the Gallowgate side breathing space with 17 minutes to go as he sent a vicious volley crashing into the net beyond a helpless Cerny.
