Tottenham Hotspur skipper Ledley King will undergo surgery on his left knee next week.
The central defender incurred the injury while on international duty for England in their recent matches against Brazil and Estonia and now looks likely to miss the start of the season for his club as a result.
King has struggled with injuries recently, including foot problems which restricted his appearances during 2007. Last summer also saw him undergo knee surgery, preventing him from starting the season for Tottenham.
His return was one of the factors which helped Spurs recover from a poor start to their 2006/07 season. On returning to fitness after his Christmas injury he helped his side to fifth place in the Premiership and a ticket to Europe.
Spurs manager Martin Jol said: "It's a routine op and it makes sense for Ledley to have it now and use the summer to recover and be back as close to the start of the season as possible."
Earlier today the 2006/07 Premiership fixtures were revealed, letting King know which matches he is likely to miss out on.
Tottenham take on newcomers Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on August 11th before playing Everton at White Hart Lane three days later. Their other games in August are against Derby and Manchester United.
