Tottenham coach Gus Poyet said Robbie Keane is "the type of character we want at the club" after the striker threw a jacket on the floor in anger at being substituted.
Spurs lost to Manchester City 2-1 at Eastlands after Keanes's opener was followed by goals from Stephen Ireland and Nedum Onuoha.
Ireland's equaliser at 59 minutes was controversial, with replays showing the player was clearly off-side.
Keane was then substituted by Juande Ramos for Darren Bent and hurled his substitutes' jacket on the floor in anger.
Poyet said: "We'll look into it [Keane's reaction to being substituted] but it just shows he wants to stay on the pitch. That's the type of character we want at the club.
"We need to make sure we kill off games. We were complacent. This is a game we have to use if we are to do better next season."
Manchester City manager Sven-Goran Eriksson said he was happy with the result.
"We have a good team. We had some weeks where we were a little bit flat but I hope this is a turning point," Eriksson said.
"We didn't play too badly in the first half, we should have been less respectful of Tottenham.
"We deserved the win. We were thinking of taking Stephen Ireland off but, luckily, we didn't."
The win for City moves them into eighth place, while Spurs remain in the 11th spot.
