Sunderland striker Kenwyne Jones was injured on international duty
Sunderland striker Kenwyne Jones is likely to miss the start of the 2008/09 Premier League season because of his knee ligament injury.

The Trinidad and Tobago international suffered the problem while playing against England in a friendly last month and looks likely to require surgery.

Manager Roy Keane is hopeful that Jones, who was his side's top scorer during their successful battle against relegation last season, will not need to go under knife.

Although he has refused to confirm a possible date for his return to training, just in case there is a need for a minor operation.

"We're assessing Kenwyne's injury daily. There is some knee ligament damage but hopefully he'll avoid major surgery," Keane told the club's official website.

"He's with some good medical people and we'll know more in the next three weeks or so.

"But he's not in my immediate plans and it's frustrating for everyone."

In addition to Jones, defender Paul McShane and striker David Connolly will be missing for the squad's pre-season trip to Portugal, which starts tomorrow, because of knee and hip problems, respectively.

However Keane remains philosophical, adding: "Unfortunately, we did get one or two injuries over the summer but that's life, you get on with it."End of story
