Kieran Richardson is set to miss Sunderland's relegation scrap with Wigan Athletic on Saturday because of a recurrence of his hamstring injury.
The England midfielder has missed two of the Black Cats' last three fixtures, against Tottenham Hotspur and Birmingham City.
And despite attempting to make his comeback when he started in the 3-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield last weekend, Richardson was forced to come off after just seven minutes.
Sunderland manager Roy Keane confirmed the blow, telling the club's official website: "It's the same injury that he had before.
"He had trained well all week but match situations are different, it's disappointing."
Despite the loss of Richardson, the Stadium of Light outfit will be boosted by the return of another midfielder, Dickson Etuhu.
The powerful Nigerian international is due to return to the north-east in the next few days following his country's elimination from the African Cup of Nations at the quarter-final stage.
And Keane believes he will be able to slot straight back into the squad for the crucial fixture against the Latics.
