David Nugent is continuing his protracted contract negotiations with Premiership side Portsmouth after it emerged he has been given leave from training with Preston today.
The 22-year-old is currently contracted to the Championship side but has been attracting interest from several top-flight teams in recent weeks.
Negotiations with Sunderland fell through last week when Sunderland boss Roy Keane became frustrated with Nugent's failure to make a quick decision on his future.
However it seems Pompey are playing the waiting game with Nugent as Preston announced he is returning to the south coast for further talks.
"David Nugent will now not be at training at Springfields [Preston's training ground] on Monday as expected," a statement from the club read.
"The England striker was due to return from his extended summer break to begin preparing for the new season but has now indicated that he will travel to Fratton Park to have further talks with potential Premiership suitors, Portsmouth.
"Preston North End have accepted a bid from Harry Redknapp's club and given permission for Portsmouth to speak to Nugent."
Nugent was allowed an extended rest period at the end of last season after he took part in the England under-21s European Championship campaign last month.
Stuart Pearce's side reached the semi-finals before crashing out on penalties to hosts, holders and eventual winners the Netherlands. Nugent scored once at the tournament, which followed his first senior goal on his international debut against Andorra earlier this year.
