Sunderland manager Roy Keane has praised his Sunderland players for a "professional performance" in the 2-0 home win over Birmingham City.
Daryl Murphy gave the home side the lead with a neat finish before substitute Rade Prica grabbed a goal on his debut to seal the points for the strugglers at the Stadium of Light.
And Keane, who witnessed his side's second win in three games following their 2-0 success against Portsmouth on January 13th, said the victory was another crucial step on the road to Premier League survival.
"I don't think the performance was great but the big plus was getting a result without playing well. It was a good, professional performance," he said.
"Every victory is important and the players have got to enjoy it, they worked their socks off. We've got to try to beat the other teams at the bottom, especially at home."
On his side's prospects for avoiding the drop, Keane said he believes his team are "heading in the right direction".
"Every game provides a different test and we got a victory and a clean sheet tonight," he continued.
"We are always talking about the strikers but our goalkeeper and defenders will be pleased with the clean sheet, because they have been heavily criticised. They should enjoy it."
