Arsenal scored twice in the last seven minutes to maintain their pace at the top of the Premier League with a 2-0 win over Wigan.
Frank Barlow took charge of the Latics while manager-in-waiting Steve Bruce watched on from the stands and for much of the game it seemed the caretaker may defy the leaders in his final match at the helm.
However a near-post header from captain William Gallas eased increasing nerves at the Emirates on 83 minutes before Tomas Rosicky slotted in a second after a swift counter attack.
Manchester City also left it late as an injury-time volley from Stephen Ireland stole all three points in a 2-1 home win over Reading.
Martin Petrov gave Sven-Goran Eriksson's side an early lead but the Royals drew level through a James Harper strike just before half time.
Another side in managerial limbo also slid to defeat as Portsmouth continued their fine run of form with a 2-0 win over Birmingham at St Andrews.
Sulley Muntari and Niko Kranjcar scored the goals to keep Harry Redknapp's side in the top six.
Yakubu Aiyegbeni and Tim Cahill scored two goals each as Everton romped to a 7-1 win over Sunderland at Goodison Park.
Leon Osman, Steven Pienaar and Andy Johnson were also on target for the Toffees while Dwight Yorke's strike will be of little consolation to Roy Keane's side.
Gary Southgate could come under more pressure in the Middlesbrough hot-seat after he presided over a 3-0 home defeat to Aston Villa.
John Carew, Olof Mellberg and Gabriel Agbonlahor capitalised on some woeful defending to add to their goal tallies for the season.
