Sunderland have been rocked by the news that their Scottish international defender Russell Anderson has been ruled out until next year.
The 28-year-old will take three months to recover from an operation after rupturing his ankle ligaments in a Carling Cup game at Luton last month.
"Russell has had an operation to reconstruct his ankle ligaments and will be out for a while," Black Cats boss Roy Keane said.
Anderson, a £1 million signing from SPL outfit Aberdeen in the close season, has only managed two appearances for his new club since moving south of the border.
Meanwhile the club have also confirmed that journeyman striker Andrew Cole's debut has been delayed until after the international break.
Cole is yet to make an appearance for his new team, his tenth, after suffering a calf injury since joining on a free transfer from Portsmouth.
He joins big-money signing Kieran Richardson on the injury table, alongside Carlos Edwards, Dean Whitehead and Stanislav Varga.
Keane's side currently lie 15th in the Premier League table ahead of this weekend's visit of Blackburn Rovers with two wins from their first seven games.
