Reading have signed the French midfielder Kalifa Cisse from Boavista for just under ?1 million (£680,000).
The Berkshire outfit said they had beaten off competition from other European clubs for Cisse's signature and the 22-year-old has put pen to paper on a three-year deal.
Cisse has been with Boavista for two years after previously playing for Estoril and Toulouse, where he started his career.
Chairman John Madejski told the club's official website: "To sign Kalifa so soon after the end of the season shows this club's ambition to do well in the Premiership next year.
"I'd like to welcome this very highly regarded player to Reading and I'm delighted we've secured his signature.
"He is also a very nice character, which is important."
Cisse is a defensively minded midfield player and a strong athlete which Reading director of football Nick Hammond believes will make his ideal for the Premiership.
"Having spent time with him and his family in Portugal, we believe he will adapt quickly to life in England and his personality will fit very well with the current squad," Hammond said.
Reading finished just outside the European qualification places this season after a strong performance from Steve Coppell's side.
