Reading have extended the contract of midfielder Brynjar Gunnarsson until the summer of 2009 but the future of defender Nick Shorey is still uncertain.
The versatile Gunnarsson, who can also play in defence, has been a key member of the Reading team since his move from Watford in 2005 and has played a major part in the Royals' success over the last two seasons.
"I'm really happy that the club have offered me this contract extension," said Gunnarsson.
"It's been fantastic to be part of the success at Reading and I'm looking forward to the rest of another big season here."
Meanwhile England defender Shorey, who was the subject of a £4 million bid from West Ham United last month, says it would be "daft" to predict his Reading future.
"It would be daft for any player to say he would be here or there this time next year," said Shorey.
"All I know is I will continue to work as hard as I can and give my all to Reading.
"I am as fully committed to the club now as I have been over the last six years I have been here."
Reading director of football, Nick Hammond, has revealed that the club may have no choice but to sell Shorey if the player does not commit his future to the club.
"We're desperately keen to keep Nicky," said Hammond. "We'll try to persuade him to stay.
"If he's still of the mindset that he doesn't want to commit to us, we will have to see where we are in the next transfer window or next summer."
