Ashley Cole has been ruled out of England's crunch Euro 2008 qualifier against Russia on Wednesday with an ankle injury.
Middlesbrough's Luke Young, 28, has been called up as a replacement for the game in Russia.
Young has not played for England since the 3-2 win in the friendly against Argentina in November 2005.
Cole was stretchered off in the second half yesterday's 3-0 win over Estonia.
The Chelsea left-back collapsed in agony after falling awkwardly when trying to block a shot.
The 26-year-old had a scan on his ankle but the full extent of his injury has not been revealed.
Boss Steve McClaren will decide between Everton's Joleon Lescott, who replaced Cole against Estonia, and Reading's Nicky Shorey as the new left-back.
Meanwhile, McClaren has hinted that Sol Campbell may keep his place ahead of skipper John Terry.
The Portsmouth defender played instead of Terry after the skipper picked up a knee injury in training.
"He [Terry] has improved a lot. We are assessing him daily and hope he will train on Monday," McClaren said.
"But there is a long way to go and he is still a big doubt."
A win for England against Guus Hiddink's side would seal their place in next year's championships in Austria and Switzerland.
