Alex Ferguson and his assistant Carlos Queiroz have been charged by the Football Association over media comments following the 1-0 home loss to Portsmouth.
The Manchester United managerial duo were incensed by several refereeing decisions as their team crashed out of the FA Cup in the sixth round.
United were denied a penalty when Sylvain Distin charged into Cristiano Ronaldo in the opening stages, while Pompey's goal came through a late Sulley Muntari spot-kick when Tomasz Kuszczak was sent off for felling Milan Baros.
Both Ferguson and Queiroz have been charged with improper conduct for interviews following the match and have until April 17th to respond.
"Ferguson's charge concerns comments about referee Martin Atkinson and [Professional Games Match Officials] general manager Keith Hackett," an FA statement said.
"Queiroz's charge relates to comments about referee Martin Atkinson."
Speaking after the Old Trafford match last month, Ferguson said Atkinson's performance had been "ridiculous".
"I cannot explain it," he admitted. "Managers get sacked because of things like that and he's going to referee a game next week.
"[Hackett] is not doing his job properly and he needs to be assessed.
"I'm assessed as a manager, players are assessed, referees should be assessed properly by the right people. That performance today should not be accepted by our game."
