Former England striker Andrew Cole bailed over domestic assault
Former England international Andrew Cole has been arrested and bailed over an alleged attack upon his wife.
The 36-year-old striker, whose 11 clubs have included Newcastle United, Manchester United and Blackburn Rovers, was reportedly detained in the early hours of yesterday morning.
According to press reports Cole was arrested over an alleged domestic assault at his £2 million mansion in Alderley Edge, Cheshire on Monday.
A Cheshire police statement said: "At 02:27 GMT on Monday February 25th, police were called to a house in Alderley Edge following an allegation of assault by a man against a woman.
"A 36-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of assault and was taken to Middlewich custody suite.
"He was interviewed and released [last night] on police bail until April 1st pending further inquiries."
Cole, who married long-term girlfriend Shirley Dewar six years ago, is currently turning out for Championship outfit Burnley after being let out on loan by Sunderland.
At his peak he was one of the most feared strikers in the English top flight, and commanded a £7 million transfer fee when he moved to Old Trafford in 1995.
But his international career failed to match the heights of his domestic exploits and he scored just one goal during a 15-cap stint.
Since leaving Blackburn Rovers, his first destination after United, Cole has played for six clubs: Fulham, Manchester City, Portsmouth, Birmingham, Sunderland and now Burnley.
