Alex Ferguson admitted Manchester United face an "uphill battle" to retain their Premier League title after falling to a 1-0 defeat in the Manchester derby.
The Red Devils boss claimed that his side of ten years ago would have been able to cope with the setback and hopes his current squad will be able to do so as well.
United have taken just two points from their opening three fixtures and are five points behind rivals Chelsea, while Liverpool and Arsenal are on four points from their two games thus far.
Ferguson said: "We have given ourselves an uphill fight; I don't think there is any question of that. Over the past few years we have always been able to overcome these things and we will have to do that again."
The Scot accused his side of being wasteful in front of goal during their defeat to City at Eastlands, claiming they only had themselves to blame.
"I do not know how many corner kicks we had or how much possession we had, but I do know we had clear-cut chances throughout the match, even in the first ten minutes," Ferguson said.
"We really should have sewn the game up even before they had crossed the halfway line. We have only got ourselves to blame let's make no mistake about that."
Ferguson added that it would be vital for United to win their next home game against Tottenham to get their title challenge back on track.
