John Terry went under the surgeon's knife today to tackle his back injury, Chelsea have confirmed.
The Blues captain's operation took place in France following consultation between "a leading neurosurgical specialist" and Chelsea staff.
"The operation to remove a sequestrated lumbar intervertebral disc was successful and everyone at the club wishes John a speedy and full recovery," a statement on the club's website said.
Chelsea have conceded six goals in the four games played since Terry became unavailable and are rumoured to be seeking additions to their ailing defence in the January transfer window.
Manchester City manager Stuart Pearce denied reports made earlier today that Jose Mourinho was targeting England under-21 star Micah Richards.
The Blues trail Manchester United by four points at the top of the Premiership after a disappointing 2-2 draw with Reading last weekend. They take on Fulham on Saturday and Aston Villa three days after that.
