Former Inter Milan coach Marco Tardelli has been named as the assistant manager to new Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni.
The 53-year-old has previously tasted international football success, scoring the second goal in Italy's 3-1 victory over West Germany in the 1982 World Cup final.
Alongside this, he has coached Bari and Arezzo as well as Inter and also spent a year in charge of the Egyptian national side.
However, it is likely that Tardelli's close working relationship with Trapattoni influenced the Football Association of Ireland's decision, with the pair employed as player and coach respectively at Juventus in the 1970s and 1980s.
Speaking to an Italian radio station, he said that he wanted to be for Trapattoni what Carlos Quieroz is for Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.
"Giovanni and I have a great desire to do well," he added.
At the same time, it has been rumored that former Irish international Liam Brady, who played alongside Tardelli in Turin, may be brought into the new managerial set-up.
Trapattoni will take charge of the Irish national side at the start of May, once he has seen out the Austrian league season with his current employers Red Bull Salzburg.
He is aiming to win a second successive title with the reigning champions.
