Manchester United have confirmed that Paul Scholes will be out until the end of January after sustaining knee ligament damage.
The influential midfielder's three-month layoff comes after he injured himself during training on the eve of United's Champions League group F game with Dynamo Kiev.
The results of an initial scan proved inconclusive, with the 32-year-old sent for another scan with a specialist today, which confirmed the Red Devils' worst fears.
"We can confirm that Paul Scholes has suffered a knee ligament injury," a United spokesperson told the club's official website.
"He will undergo an operation on Thursday and will be out for approximately 12 weeks."
Sir Alex Ferguson's team have so far not struggled in Scholes' absence, beating Dynamo Kiev 4-2 in Ukraine and Middlesbrough 4-1 at home last Saturday.
The United manager also has a host of stars returning to action, with Michael Carrick expected to partner summer signing Owen Hargreaves in central midfield against Arsenal next week.
Club captain Gary Neville is also thought to be nearing a comeback after seven months on the sidelines.
Both Arsenal and United are tied on 26 points at the top of the Premier League table, although the Gunners have a game in hand.
