Gary Neville will miss out on the chance to help his Manchester United side to the double after an ankle injury brought a premature end to his season.
After skippering Sir Alex Ferguson's team for most of their successful Premiership campaign, the right-back will be absent for the Wembley showdown with Chelsea due to the problem that has kept him out of action since March 17th.
The England international had hoped that he might return to the United rearguard for the showpiece match, but suffered a relapse as he attempted to increase the intensity of his training this week.
"Gary Neville has undergone an exploratory operation on his right ankle and he will miss the FA Cup final," confirmed a club statement.
The set-back means that veteran midfielder Ryan Giggs will continue his captaincy duties for Saturday's clash, although Neville may make the trip to the capital as a spectator.
Either John O'Shea or Wes Brown are likely to deputise in defence as the Old Trafford outfit attempt to leave Jose Mourinho with only the Carling Cup to show for his season's efforts.
