Everton manager David Moyes has accepted "substantial" libel damages over claims made by former player Wayne Rooney in his autobiography.

In the England striker's book "My Story So Far", Mr Rooney claimed his former boss had leaked a private conversation between the two men to the press in order to pin the blame on the striker for the controversial switch.

Mr Rooney, as an 18-year-old, was sold to Everton's Premier League rivals Manchester United for an estimated £25 million in 2004.

Mr Moyes filed a writ in the High Court after the publication of the player's book, claiming the text "injured his professional and personal reputation".

He also claims it caused him personal distress.

The undisclosed sum paid to Mr Moyes will be funded by Mr Rooney, co-author Hunter Davies and the book publisher HarperCollins.

Solicitor Edward Parladorio, for Mr Moyes, told the High Court that his client was accused of "a serious breach of trust" by Mr Rooney, which he claimed was "wholly untrue".
