English football's reputation took another knock on Thursday night as crowd trouble erupted between visiting Tottenham fans and their Sevilla counterparts during their clubs' Uefa Cup match.

Local riot police were called into action as pre-match clashes between the two sets of fans continued inside the Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan during the first half of the game.

Missiles were thrown between enclosures and at the police even after the authorities had separated the factions.

According to reports eight people, including seven Tottenham supporters, have been taken to hospital with injuries.

The incidents come just a day after Manchester United fans were involved in angry confrontations with opposing Roma fans and the police in the Italian capital during a Champions League game.

"Any incidents of crowd trouble in the Sevilla against Tottenham match will be investigated by Uefa. We will study the reports from the referee and the Uefa match delegate," an official confirmed to the BBC.

Should, as seems likely, the incident be flagged up in the match report, it will be the second inquiry into an English club and its fans after the European federation announced it would begin gathering evidence on the violence at the Stadio Olimpico.
