Real Madrid appear to have accepted defeat in their pursuit of Premier League starlets Cesc Fabregas and Cristiano Ronaldo.
The Spanish giants have long been linked with the Arsenal midfielder and Manchester United winger, but have always been given short shrift by the English clubs.
And it now seems as though the Primera Liga champions will turn their attentions elsewhere.
The club's sporting director, Predrag Mijatovic, told Spanish radio that he would not "waste time on things which we cannot do".
"Of course it would not be bad for us to have a player like Cristiano Ronaldo, but he is at a great club like Manchester United - I see it as an impossible signing," he said.
And in relation to Fabregas, who at 20 is already a senior player in the Arsenal side and a Spanish international, Mijatovic admitted that getting him out of his contract at the Emirates, which runs until 2012, was unlikely.
"We are not the only team who would like to have a player such as Cesc, but he belongs to a great club like Arsenal and it is almost impossible to sign him," he added.
The Real official insisted that the club had not ended their chase forever, but acknowledged that pulling off either deal would be "tremendously difficult".
Ronaldo currently tops the Premier League scoring charts after finding the net 17 times in the league and Fabregas has 11 goals this season after a blistering start to the campaign.
