Manchester United defender Wes Brown will fly home early from his side's pre-season tour of South Africa following the death of his pregnant sister.

United manager Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed that the 28-year-old will leave the squad after learning that his half-sister Claire Fallows, 36, died in hospital on Saturday.

She was around three months pregnant and was understood to have a history of heart problems.

Sir Alex said that the England defender would return to the UK on Wednesday from the pre-season tour.

It is not known if Brown will play for Manchester United against Orlando Pirates in Durban tomorrow.

Brown, who has 17 caps for England, is understood to only have become acquainted with his half-sister relatively recently, and it is a further blow after he lost his father Bancroft in February.

Fallows, leaves a husband Tom and three sons aged one, 13 and 16.
