Franz Beckenbauer, the Bayern Munich club president, has given hope to Manchester United that they could still sign Owen Hargreaves during the January transfer window.
The Old Trafford club made no secret of the fact that they were chasing the England international midfielder during the summer but were scuppered in their attempts to sign him, despite the 26-year-old expressing his desire to move.
Hargreaves has often told of his wish to return to England, where his parents and close family live, but Bayern have, until now, categorically refused to sanction a move, having already lost star midfielder Michael Ballack to Chelsea.
However, Beckenbauer has now said that they would be prepared to listen to offers for the Canadian-born player.
"If the offer that is being talked about really is true," said the Bayern supremo, referring to rumours of a £15 million bid. "We will have to think about it.
"In principle we were right to stick to our guns over Owen. If a player has signed a new contract with us, then tries to move for more money, we are within our rights to say no.
"But this is different and if we receive an offer on the scale that has been mentioned, it is going to have to be given serious consideration."
