Liverpool's Champions League campaign is in jeopardy following a 2-1 defeat against Besiktas in Istanbul.
Besiktas dominated the early part of the game and although the Reds enjoyed more possession in the second half they struggled to put the home side under significant pressure.
The Turkish team took the lead 12 minutes into the match when Serdar Ozcan's goal-bound shot deflected off Sami Hyypia and past a helpless Pepe Reina.
Besiktas grew in confidence following the goal and the Reds struggled to construct any meaningful chances in an intimidating atmosphere.
Steven Gerrard was restricted to a poked effort, following an interchange with Dirk Kuyt, which was easily saved, while Andriy Voronin failed to connect with the ball three yards out from goal after Gokhan Zan's poor defensive header.
Although the Reds improved when Yossi Benayoun replaced the misfiring Jermaine Pennant in the second half, they still struggled to break down a defiant Besiktas side who chose to play on the counter attack.
The home side were rewarded for their patient play when Deivson Bobo scored the winner with eight minutes remaining, beating Reina from 18 yards out.
Liverpool pulled a goal back almost immediately through Gerrard, who met a cross with a flying header to give the Reds a lifeline.
They then launched a series of desperate attacks as the game came to a close, using substitute Peter Crouch as a focal point, however they could not take advantage of the half-chances which came their way.
Rafael Benitez's men must now win their remaining three games in the group if they are to qualify for the knockout stage of the competition.
