Steven Gerrard is the sixth Liverpool player to be burgled in 18 months
Steven Gerrard has become the sixth Liverpool footballer to be burgled in the last 18 months after intruders entered his home last night.

The England vice-captain was playing for his club in Marseilles in a Champions League match when his wife, Alex Curran, and a friend were confronted by four masked individuals during the evening.

They were left "shaken but uninjured", police said.

It is still unclear whether the couple's children were present when the crime took place.

The burglars made off with items of jewellery from the house, which is in Formby, Merseyside, before Curran called the police at around 21:30 GMT.

A Merseyside police spokeswoman described the incident as "a confrontational burglary" and said they had begun forensic investigations and door-to-door house calls in the area.

"Four men, wearing dark clothing, hoods and balaclavas, entered the property and stole items of jewellery," the spokeswoman stated.

"We cannot confirm the nature of the confrontation."

"The female resident, and another woman who was in the house at the time, were left shaken but uninjured."

Just last month, Gerrard's Liverpool team-mate Dirk Kuyt had his house burgled while he was on international duty with the Netherlands.

And goalkeeper Pepe Reina also had his house broken into and several items stolen in May.

Former player Jerzy Dudek, now with Real Madrid, and current stars Daniel Agger and Peter Crouch have also had their Merseyside properties targeted in the last 18 months.
