Javier Mascherano has warned Liverpool he will only sign a new deal if manager Rafael Benitez stays at the club.
The in-form Argentinean has agreed terms on a five-year deal having joined the Reds on loan from West Ham in January.
Benitez will urge co-owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett to release funds to seal the transfer at a meeting on December 16th.
The Spaniard has been locked in a war of words with the American owners in recent weeks over transfers, sparking rumours about whether he will be sacked.
Mascherano, 23, said he wants assurances over Benitez's future.
"It's very important for me Rafa stays as manager. He gave me a great opportunity when I came to Liverpool," Mascherano told the News of the World.
"I don't want to talk about the problem Rafa has with Liverpool. They have to talk, but it's a problem that can be resolved.
"I think Rafa will stay because the team is good and we are in a good position in the Champions League and Premier League."
Mascherano has made 15 appearances in central midfield for the Reds this season, ousting Mohamed Sissoko from Benitez's plans.
The former River Plate ace admits he will have to be patient as the club's hierarchy discuss their transfer plans.
"We were talking about the situation with the club and I think everything is now very close," Mascherano added.
"But we need to wait because in the last week Liverpool have another situation.
"I don't know if my situation will be resolved before 16th December. I'm waiting for the solution and then I'm sure I will stay here."
