Everton have completed the signing of German goalkeeper Stefan Wessels on a free transfer.
The 28-year-old will deputise for first-choice stopper Tim Howard in goal for the Toffees this season, whose only other options for the number one shirt are youngsters Iain Turner and John Ruddy.
Wessels has signed an initial one-year contract at Goodison Park following his release by Bundesliga side FC Cologne and said he is looking forward to the challenge of the Premier League.
"I am excited to be here in England," he told the club's official website.
"It is the first time I have played for a club outside of Germany but the English Premier League is a very exciting league and I am looking forward to my time here at Everton."
Wessels began his career at Bayern Munich, where he was the second-choice goalkeeper behind German international Oliver Kahn.
The youngster gained Champions League experience during his time with the Bavarian giants, winning the title in 2001 and making his debut for the club against Glasgow Rangers in the competition in 1999.
He moved on to Cologne in 2003 seeking first team football, but his contract was not renewed at the end of last season ahead of his release by the club.
Wessels becomes manager David Moyes' fourth confirmed signing of the summer after the club also picked up defenders Phil Jagielka and Leighton Baines and midfield star Steven Pienaar.
Manuel Fernandes is also set to complete his move from Benfica, subject to international clearance.
