Former Swiss captain Johann Vogel has signed a two-and-a-half year contract with Blackburn Rovers after impressing during a two-week trial.
The central midfield player was out of contract after his deal with Real Betis was cancelled in December and he has been training with Blackburn in the hope of securing a new deal.
The 31-year-old has signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with an option of a further year.
He became available on a free transfer after Betis allowed him to leave following a legal dispute.
Vogel, who has been capped 94 times by his country, was allowed to move outside the designated transfer window because he is a free agent.
He moved to Spain and spent 18 months with Betis before signing a deal with Mark Hughes' side.
Vogel was captain of Switzerland in the 2006 World Cup and played for AC Milan in 2005 as well as spending a six-year term with PSV Eindhoven where he was a team-mate of Rovers' centre-back Andre Ooijer.
If he receives international clearance, he could make his debut against relegation threatened Wigan in the Premier League fixture at Ewood Park on Saturday.
