John Terry is set to miss the first month of the season with a knee injury.
The Chelsea skipper missed today's Community Shield against Manchester United after suffering medial knee ligament damage in training yesterday, according to reports.
The news is a hammer blow for England boss Steve McClaren as Terry could miss the crunch Euro 2008 qualifiers against Israel and Russia next month.
Terry has been playing through the pain barrier after breaking a toe in the defeat to Rangers in a pre-season friendly.
The defender could miss the Blues' first five league games including the clash with Liverpool on August 19th.
Terry is also expected to sit out England's friendly with bitter rivals Germany on August 22nd at Wembley.
The 26-year-old was replaced in the starting line-up in the Community Shield by new signing Tal Ben Haim.
Terry missed almost two months last season with a back injury with boss Jose Mourinho admitting the skipper's absence was a major factor in the Blues surrendering their Premiership crown to United.
Meanwhile, striker Didier Drogba also missed the game with United at Wembley through injury.
