AC Milan are 80 per cent certain that Chelsea misfit Andriy Shevchenko will join them before the start of the new Serie A season.
Rossoneri president Silvio Berlusconi said that the European champions had made their favourite son their top summer transfer target, ahead of even Barcelona's Samuel Eto'o.
Shevchenko has failed to live up to his massive reputation and £30 million transfer fee since arriving at Stamford Bridge, scoring just four league goals as he struggled to adapt to the pace of the Premiership.
"When I spoke with [vice-president] Adriano Galliani a few days ago, I was given the impression that there was an 80 per cent chance Sheva would return to Milan," Berlusconi told Italian television.
"If the percentage had now fallen, Galliani would have surely have told me.
"I like Eto'o, he's young, but I'm a romantic and I prefer Shevchenko," the former Italian president continued.
"Sheva has a great desire to come back and there are no obstacles regarding his salary, because it would be equal to one of our other champions.
"Next, we must find an agreement with Chelsea on his cost. Sheva would make an ideal addition to our attack.
"I consider Sheva my son. I have shared many important moments with him, like his father's operation and the birth of his son, who I am godfather to."
Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has consistently denied speculation that Shevchenko, 30, could return to the San Siro, despite the player reportedly being a source of friction between the manager and owner Roman Abramovich.
