Roberto Mancini has announced he will step down as Inter Milan coach at the end of the 2007/08 season after four years in charge.
Speaking to the press after his side were knocked out of the Champions League by Liverpool, following a 1-0 defeat at the San Siro, Mancini said he wanted to move on to a new challenge.
"I know I still have four years to run on my contract, but the next two-and-a-half months will be my last guiding Inter," Mancini told reporters.
"I've told the players and it's right to tell everyone."
Mancini's existing long-term contract with the Italian champions makes the announcement something of a shock.
However, speculation is already mounting that former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho could be in line to take over the Nerazzurri later this year after nearly nine months out of football.
The Portuguese has spoken of his desire to coach in Italy or Spain after his sudden exit from Stamford Bridge last September.
Despite the timing, Mancini claims the decision has nothing to do with the defeat to the Reds or elimination from the Champions League at the first knockout stage for the second season in succession.
Inter remain on course for a third consecutive Serie A title this year - they are currently six points clear of second-placed AS Roma, having suffered only one defeat all season.
