Arsenal have captured French youngster Lassana Diarra from Chelsea for an undisclosed fee in the last of the transfer deadline day deals last night.
Diarra has signed a long-term deal with the Gunners after being linked with a move across London for most of the summer.
The 22-year-old is comfortable playing in midfield or defence having performed there for the Blues over the last two seasons.
With the west London club having added Brazilian full-back Juliano Belletti from Barcelona and the wealth of options Jose Mourinho has in central midfield, the Blues decided to sell the former Le Havre player.
Although having only played 13 times for Chelsea, Diarra did pick up a Carling Cup winners medal after being part of the team that beat the Gunners at the Millennium Stadium in February.
Despite his lack of first-team opportunities Diarra has represented France three times since making his debut against Lithuania in March 2007.
Diarra said: "I have great respect for the manager Arsene Wenger and am attracted by the style of football that the team plays.
"Of course I am excited by what the future holds and keen to play my part in helping Arsenal fight for trophies this season and for years to come."
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger said he was attracted to Diarra's versatility and his competitiveness.
He explained: "Lassana is a multi-functional player, making him a great addition to our squad. Not only is he hard working, he has a creative edge and is comfortable playing in the middle of the pitch or at right back."
