Former Real Madrid boss Fabio Capello has become the new favourite for the vacant England manager's job following Jose Mourinho's withdrawal.
Ex-Chelsea manager Mourinho declared himself out of the running yesterday, despite hinting earlier this month that he would like to discuss terms for the job with Football Association chief executive Brian Barwick.
The Portuguese had been the favourite among the bookies and the fans to succeed Steve McClaren, but it is thought he has now been replaced at the top of the FA's wish-list by Capello.
The Italian has won domestic titles with every club he has managed, including the Scudetto in his native Italy with a record three different clubs - AC Milan, Roma and Juventus.
A major drawback with Capello is his distinct lack of English, however it is thought he would bring in a backroom staff of English-speaking coaches including former Chelsea star Gianfranco Zola and ex-England striker Alan Shearer.
Capello's son and agent Pierfelippo Capello is quoted by Sky Sports as saying: "The England job is really special.
"When the FA wants to speak to you, you have to listen. No contact has been made yet but we are waiting."
Several other sources are suggesting the 61-year-old is set to begin talks with the FA over a possible appointment - which could be concluded as soon as the next couple of weeks.
