Gary Megson has quit his position as manager of Leicester City to pursue talks with Bolton Wanderers about their vacant managerial post.
The Premiership outfit have been without a manager after sacking Sammy Lee last week, just nine games into the league season.
Leicester City chairman Milan Mandaric said he was disappointed to have lost Megson but felt that if he denied the former West Brom boss the chance to speak to the Trotters it could have been detrimental to his own team.
Megson now becomes the clear favourite to replace Lee at the Trotters after Graeme Souness reportedly turned down an offer from the north-west club.
Mandaric rebuffed two offers from Bolton earlier this week but following the Foxes' 1-0 defeat to Sheffield United last night Megson informed Mandaric of his wish to leave.
The chairman said: "Gary decided that he wanted to speak to Bolton. We have agreed compensation and we move on.
"This is something that was not planned. We have worked tirelessly to prevent this from happening, but in the end there was nothing we could do. Gary's heart was not in this football club anymore."
Mandaric said his priority was to make a "significant appointment" to replace Megson as soon as possible.
He added: "Needless to say our objectives to win promotion this season remain the same. The search for a new manager begins in earnest."
Until an appointment is made assistant manager Frank Burrows and Gerry Taggart have been placed in charge of Leicester's first-team affairs.
