Wigan clinched a 5-3 win over Blackburn at the JJB Stadium after appearing to surrender a three-goal lead.
The Latics established a 3-0 advantage after just 36 minutes as strikes from Denny Landzaat, Marcus Bent and Paul Scharner, combined with a penalty miss from the visitors' Benni McCarthy, gave them a commanding lead.
A hat-trick from Paraguayan international Roque Santa Cruz, punctuated by a red card for Brett Emerton, pulled Rovers level but Mark Hughes' side could not maintain their momentum.
Marcus Bent grabbed two more to complete his own hat-trick and secure Wigan a win which moves them a step closer to safety.
There were also plenty of goals at the City of Manchester stadium where Manchester City ran out 4-2 winners against Bolton.
Darius Vassell and Kelvin Etuhu scored late on after a Lubo Michalik own goal and Rolando Bianchi's tap-in had been matched by strikes from Kevin Nolan and El-Hadji Diouf.
Turkish striker Tuncay Sanli scored the only goal of the game against Derby at Pride Park to give Middlesbrough a second successive Premier League win.
Mikael Forssell netted early to set Birmingham on their way at home to Reading but the Royals pegged them back for a 1-1 draw through Stephen Hunt's second-half penalty.
Meanwhile Sunderland and Aston Villa shared the points at the Stadium of Light as Danny Higginbotham's early header for the hosts was cancelled out by a Shaun Maloney free-kick.
