Denny Landzaat has joined Feyenoord from Wigan for an undisclosed fee, the Premier League club have announced.
Wigan said they had "reluctantly agreed" to let the Dutch international midfielder return to the Eredivisie in a deal thought to be about £1 million.
Landzaat, 31, joined the Latics in the summer of 2006 for £2.3 million from AZ Alkmaar.
Over the last two years he has made 52 Premier League appearances and scored three goals.
Despite being brought to the JJB Stadium by former boss Paul Jewell, the midfielder had been a regular in the side since Steve Bruce took over.
Bruce admitted he was sad to see Landzaat, who has more than 30 caps for the Dutch national team, go.
"I said I didn't particularly want to lose any other players this January, and he has done well for me," the former Birmingham manager said.
"But sometimes in football, you have to make difficult decisions and when the offer came in, it was one we decided to accept. He leaves with all our good wishes."
Landzaat himself added: "I'd just like to thank the Wigan fans because they have always been good to me. I'm confident the team will do well and survive this season."
