Newcastle further eased the pressure on under-fire manager Sam Allardyce with a 2-1 victory over Birmingham at St James Park.
The winner was scored in stoppage time by Habib Beye after Obefemi Martins penalty had cancelled out Cameron Jeromes early strike.
It was harsh on Birmingham after they had the better of much of the game and indeed looked more threatening than Arsenal did when they visited the north-east in midweek.
Newcastle had started brightly, knocking the ball about well without really hurting Birminghams defence.
However, the Magpies back four was soon exposed when Jerome latched onto a long through ball from Mathew Sadler, shook off a challenge from David Rozehnal, rounded keeper Shay Given and passed into an empty net.
Newcastle were then fortunate to get back into the game when Saddler was judged - rather controversially - to have felled Martins, who slotted home the resulting penalty eight minutes before the break.
Jerome continued to threaten throughout the second half and Birmingham rebuffed Newcastles attacks with ease, but it was Beye who popped up at the end to seal the points for a jubilant Allardyce.
