Cesc Fabregas says he would relish the chance to become Arsenal's full-time captain at some point in the future.

The Spaniard says he thrives under that kind of responsibility and would like the opportunity to marshal the Gunners team. Fabregas has been named vice captain for next season but he is already looking further ahead.

He said: "Everybody wants this kind of responsibility and 100 per cent me as well. It something that I have liked ever since I have been young and it would be no problem for me to be captain of this club."

The 20-year-old admitted that Thierry Henry's move to Barcelona was a blow for the club but Fabregas feels the players can respond. The midfielder thinks there is still a lot of quality in the club but that they must fight to achieve their desired results.

He said: We are not talking about one or two players being important here. Collectively this side is very good. That is what we have to keep showing to ourselves, that we are good enough to fight for everything."

Fabregas believes the club are in a strong position to challenge for the league this season if they can avoid any major injuries.

"We are one of the most important teams in Europe. Definitely we have to be fighting for the title because it would not be Arsenal if we are not doing this," he said.

Fabregas added that he hoped manager Arsene Wenger would stay at the club as it would not be the same without him.
